Select an operating system

The operating system is a collection of utilities that are available on any fairly sophisticated electronic device. Its presence allows "regular" applications to use the hardware capabilities of the module, interact with the user, and so on. Modern tablets are equipped with one of three popular operating systems: iOS, Android or Windows. And there are “tablets” on store shelves with a couple of operating systems installed. However, this is more of an exception to the rule and applies to the Android / Windows combination.

 

iOS

The most stable operating system is iOS. It’s optimized as much as possible, so you don’t need a large amount of RAM. By choosing a tablet, you have a well-thought-out user interface on iOS and lots of different apps. But be prepared that many of them will pay. This operating system is owned by Apple, so it is only installed on iPad tablets, which cost more than Android or Windows on-board devices.

But Kupertiak’s products provide the longest technical support, and even the older generations of “apple” devices perform no worse than competing offerings based on modern hardware platforms. A huge benefit of the entire iOS device family is the availability of a comfortable ecosystem. Of course, in order to take full advantage of must own more than one device with a lid on an apple. The disadvantages of iOS proximity are the complexity of directly exchanging user files and the limited customization of the interface. Well, the inability to expand the available memory scares many potential buyers.


Benefits: Easy to use, easy to learn, advanced and comfortable ecosystem.

Disadvantages: the platform is closed, memory cards are not supported, and there are problems with exchanging files from third parties, non-customizability (installation of themes and other utilities that change the interface).

 

Android

The Android operating system is open and free, so most tablet manufacturers choose it. The software was developed by Google. The system is updated regularly, but budget asset owners may not feel it. Some manufacturers are too lazy to modify the firmware for tablets replaced by new models. Android’s openness allows users to switch between “regular” apps: player, browser, keyboard, dialer, and more. The other thing is that changing the really basic things involves the presence of “straight” hands and often a loss of warranty.

The most unfavorable feature of this operating system is that the appetite for system resources increases and tends to destroy the “junk” of digital. A full gigabyte was considered enough RAM, then in 2020 they are only talking about 2 GB. As for the "garbage" - the operating system's built-in tools have still not learned how to handle it successfully. In particularly advanced cases, only a full recovery with the loss of ALL user data will allow the device to return to a comfortable working speed. Fortunately, such a radical method is extremely rare.

 

Advantages: rich functionality, possibility to change the chosen interface, many free applications.

Disadvantages: infrequent system updates on budget tables, increased resource requirements for stable operation.

 

The windows

Windows tablets have been around for a long time. But it wasn’t until a few years ago that they started getting rid of fans and processors that consume a lot of batteries. And with the release of the tenth version of the operating system, the interface of such devices has become much more user-friendly. On the one hand, Microsoft programmers have creatively adapted many necessary things, such as a quick display of active applications, a Back button, and a notification center. On the other hand, Windows 10 has learned to automatically switch to a more convenient mode when working with the keyboard and the appropriate algorithm is configured. Compared to Android, this system is better optimized for low-power hardware platforms. The same service became an indirect reason for that current Windows tablets are either high-performance solutions, or frankly weak, but have a keyboard. Well, the main advantage of the Microsoft operating system is that it can use almost any "adult" application. Some even without a keyboard, if only the power of charging allowed it.

 

Advantages: the most comfortable environment for full-fledged work, with various contents, support for third-party peripherals.

Disadvantages: extremely limited number of offers with average performance level.

7-8 inches

The portable tablet is great for use at home, at work or in an educational institution. This is facilitated by their minimal size and weight. People use such tablets to read books, listen to music, watch movies or play along the way. The compact tablets are convenient as car navigators as well as tools for mobile surfing. Finally, it is the optimal size for children’s hands.

Advantages: compact size, minimal weight, cheap.

Disadvantages: the resolution is often low and the charge is not strong enough.


10 inches

The best tablet of choice for home use. At the same time, modern tablets have become so thin and light that transporting them is no difficulty. The large dimensions allow you to place a better speaker system with such a device and a larger capacity battery. However, many manufacturers believe that such a large tablet-talking GSM module is useless, even if the circuit solution supports 3G technology.

Advantages: the screen size is suitable for a large number of tasks. In both mobile and fixed cases.

Disadvantages: Inadequate screen resolution in budget models, graininess is observed, many tablets do not have a phone module, and Windows devices do not differ from each other in productive filling.

 

More than 10 inches

There are currently larger tablets. They have an 11 to 13 inch diagonal screen. These are usually “tablets” with iOS or Windows installed, and Android-based-sized devices are much less likely to be made. Obviously, these devices are not very mobile and tend to focus on professional use.

Benefits: The best size for comfortable work with both the keyboard and stylus. Good for watching movies.

Disadvantages: too large dimensions and solid weight.

 

Choosing the best processor for your tablet

Strictly speaking, the “engine” of most tablets consists of several special units that are technologically combined on a single substrate and are called a chip-on-a-chip (SoC) system. The only exceptions here are high-performance, professional-grade solutions based on Intel Core M or ULV processors, but the latter features are not considered.

 

Number of seeds

This is again an exception to the Intel Atom family of single-chip systems that work with x86 / x64 instructions. Atomic nuclei can be combined into clusters in so-called compounds and this is done to optimize energy consumption. Let’s say half of these operate at high frequencies and turn on when needed to serve higher processing power requests. The second "works" the rest of the time, and because the cores in it are relatively low frequency - they consume much less energy. We cannot give clear advice - which seed number is optimal in a given case.

For example, the 6-core A11 Bionic chip (from Apple) is said to shred the latest eight-core Helio P40 (from Mediatek) as they say. The biggest, what we can suggest here - pay attention to the "freshness" of the seeds. When choosing a processor for your tablet, it’s best to focus on the Cortex A55 / A75 generation, in extreme cases the A53 / A73 bundle (energy efficient / high speed) and their custom versions.

 

Video subsystem

The second part of the mobile processor is an accelerator - a kind of integrated video card. If your tablet should not be used for gaming or working with complex graphics, you should not pay special attention to the performance of this node. Otherwise, the speed at which the video accelerator can perform floating-point operations (flop) must be considered. In addition, the screen resolution matters here as well. Everyone has their own idea of   the convenient refresh rate as well as the requirements for graphic quality adjustment. At the same time, we undertake to state that about 100 GFlops SoC-containing tablets have adequate gaming performance.

 

SoC and its manufacturers

The ARM architecture itself was developed by the company of the same name, which made its solutions available to everyone. Currently, the intellectual property rights have been acquired by the Japanese company SoftBank. In total, there are about one and a half thousand licensees; we are interested in the following products:

 

APPLE Ax

With permission, cupertinians develop their own version of the seeds. PowerVR accelerators from Imagination Technologies are used as the graphics subsystem. The single-chip A11 Bionic system already has its own GPU, but tablets are not yet available on this SoC. Very powerful chips in every sense, even on the outdated A9. There are fewer cores, the frequencies are lower, and all competitors do it.

Benefits: Apple tablets have really high gaming and performance and support even the most advanced features.

Disadvantages: too expensive.

 

Exynos

Samsung also prefers to refine the inventory core. Currently, the SoC 7870, 7880, 7885 series and all eight regiments. Older Mali accelerators (T830, T880, G71) are used for graphics processing. What can I say - the power of such a system is enough for all the needs of the tablet and the owner. If necessary, South Korea will incorporate equipment and third-party SoC.

Benefits: Samsung tablets are characterized by excellent performance and all modern "bells and whistles".

Disadvantages: price, sometimes not optimized firmware.

 

INTEL ATOM

The chip in this single-chip system has extremely low power consumption. The company has managed to “squeeze out” its heat package to a few watts, and Intel now doesn’t want to change that. Accordingly, we are not even talking about performance descriptions. Unfortunately, low-budget Windows tablets are based on the Atom platform.

 

Benefits: Tablets based on Intel Atom chips are distinguished by affordable price and fair autonomy.

Disadvantages: The power of a single-chip system is only sufficient for simple tasks.

 

Kirin

This SoC family will launch a Huawei subsidiary for some of the parent brand’s mobile devices. The Chinese don’t bother updating ARM cores, so their single-chip system tends to run a little slower than its “classmates”. As with Exynos, Kirin chips have Mali graphics accelerators. The trouble is that HiSilicon engineers (or executives) like to save money. Where the Samsung SoC uses the 12-core version of Mali, Huawei’s mobile processors often have a quad-core cost. With the following consequences.

 

Pros: The brand is very worthy of flagship chips.

Disadvantages: Budget mid-budget single-chip systems are good at performance and moderately game-like.

 

MediaTek

The brand of the same name is more fully represented than all its competitors in the low-cost solutions segment. The company uses ready-made kits and graphics (PowerVR and Mali). It is not involved in optimization, has no production of its own, and financial opportunities do not allow its partners to invest. As a result, MediaTek single-chip systems fall short of alternative offerings if they are manufactured to outdated technology standards. On paper, on such a SoC, everything can be beautiful, but not really in real life. But the company’s chips only work perfectly with GPS.

Benefits: Huge selection of primary and secondary single-chip systems.

Disadvantages: noticeably lower than managers in terms of technological growth.

 

Snapdragon

The most popular and most massive single-chip systems. Qualcomm is developing them based on deeply redesigned licensed cores and its own Adreno accelerators. Such hydrocarbons are characterized by excellent overall and gaming performance, good energy efficiency, and other “good”. The main disadvantage is the increased costs.

 

Benefits: Snapdragon chips result in a wide variety of excellent tablets.

Disadvantages: relatively expensive, the cheapest solutions of direct competitors of other platforms are lower.

 

RockChip, Spreadtrum and the like

They specialize in ultra-budget solutions. Inventory cores and accelerators, the strictest possible technological standards at the time of production - miracles cannot be expected from such single-chip systems.

Advantages: The right tablets have attractive price tags.

Disadvantages: suitable for even the most demanding users. They usually have outdated wireless interfaces that do not affect autonomy at all.

 

Technological process

This term has been mentioned several times, it remains to be clarified what is affected by the norms used to create the SoC. Everything is very simple, the finer the chip topology, the higher its operating frequency (power) and lower its power consumption. The most technologically advanced mobile crystals are now manufactured to 10 nm standards. The 14-16 nm manufacturing process is also still quite modern.

 

Random access memory

It is a storage device that provides quick access to content and requires constant “maintenance” of the information stored. During the operation of the tablet, the kernel of the operating system, various services, running applications, and most of the data they use are located in RAM. If there is not enough space to perform the priority task, some user programs running in the background may stop and move to the so-called cache. In the stricter version, only the important data remains and the applications themselves are completely “filled in”. The bad thing is that a significant lack of “operability” leads not only to a slowdown in the device, but also to the active use of internal memory, i.e., accelerated wear. The more applications you will be using at the same time (e.g. a social networking client, messenger, music player, game), the more impressive it should be on your tablet based on this feature. We recommend that hard players focus on the amount of memory using the "extra" gigabyte. However, a clear excess of this resource increases battery consumption.

 

1 GB

In principle, such a volume has low-power devices that are not suitable for anything. It’s best to have a lightweight user shell for your class of tablet operating system. Ideally, “bare” Android.

 

Advantages: reasonable price.

Disadvantages: severe limitation on the number of people working in the background of the programs.

 

2 GB

Most applications have a normal amount of memory with moderate "appetite" for system resources. It’s enough for multiple background apps, five or two open tabs in the browser, and a screen image that doesn’t exceed Full HD resolution. "Hard" games go, but almost every other task has to be stopped. This applies to Android and Windows. The iOS operating system will not cause any problems with the 2GB memory.

Pros: Lack of RAM is almost never felt.

Disadvantages: enough for particularly demanding games and higher resolution than Full HD.

 

3 GB

Convenient amount of memory in the vast majority of tablet usage situations and scenarios. This guarantees stable operation of the system in the presence of a 2K resolution screen. Delayed delays can only be observed if two resource-intensive applications are started in parallel.

Advantages: there will always be enough memory, except in some cases.

Disadvantages: almost nothing.

 

4 GB and more

More than three gigabytes of memory is still relatively rare in tablets. This amount does not limit the user in any way, for a sufficient number of applications and for all three-dimensional games.

 

Advantages: no restrictions.

Disadvantages: high cost.


Additional features

 

Memory card slot

Any tablet has a certain amount of non-volatile memory. It's also called permanent. Stores the operating system and user data (applications, music, videos, documents, and other files). The microSD card slot expands the available space. Unfortunately, it’s not available in Apple products, so you need to decide right away which iPad to buy and how much internal memory it has.

 

Wi-Fi, 3G or 4G

Before you buy a tablet, be sure to know which gadgets are used to connect to the Internet. Budget devices can only transfer data over Wi-Fi. It will not be unnecessary to clarify which LTE bands the tablet supports. Domestic operators can exchange data in ranges B3, B7, B20, B38 and B40. However, there is no particular variety in terms of high speed internet connection between 4G tablets. Returning to Wi-Fi, we remind you that this wireless interface can operate at 2, 4, and 5 GHz.

 

GPS navigation

Most tablets can successfully perform the functions of a navigator, but there are separate models that are made using a universal radio module. Ie supports the device's mobile networks - there is GPS. An example of this is the “simple” Wi-Fi and Cellular version of the iPad.

When selecting a table, make sure the camera is last. Now a rare manufacturer integrates decent optics and a sensor into a “tablet”. The matrix resolution of the main module is most often five or eight megapixels. The quality of the images does not exceed the quality obtained when using a smartphone with an average price level. There’s nothing to say about budget pills - they give blurred or too noisy images.

 

Keyboard support

There are basically no basic restrictions on using a Bluetooth keyboard on any tablet. And many models with Windows have a full-size USB port that allows you to connect a manipulator or input device over the air with a suitable adapter. A peculiarity of these possibilities is that such methods do not guarantee the stability of the pairing and involve increased energy consumption. If you want to use a tablet for active text work, choose to connect a tablet with a full or optional keyboard through a mechanical connector.

 

Selection recommendations

  • When choosing a tablet, pay particular attention to the following:

Also look at the operating system. A lot of graphics editors have been created for Windows, but not all tablets start Photoshop. Therefore, in some cases, it may be worth looking at Android, which is much better optimized for use on a portable device. The professional models on iOS are ideal for digital creativity, but they also come at a good price.

 

Tablet PC for the Internet

We recommend that you familiarize yourself with the amount of RAM. The larger the browser, the more stable it will be, the more tabs you can open. The least interested in the operating system. Internet surfing is the same for iOS and Android or Windows.

 

Processor - you need to focus on a model with a powerful graphics subsystem.

RAM - many modern games require the amount they need at least 3GB.

In addition, you should be familiar with battery capacity. Even a tablet with a fairly solid battery will not allow you to play for more than four consecutive hours. What about Chinese devices with a small element ...

 

Tablet computer for baby

If you are going to give a child a tablet, be sure to:

the presence of child mode - the child has no access to "adult" sites, and the user interface of the device should be colorful and extremely simple.
